You probably are wondering why there is an article about cannabis in a blog on cosmetic innovations, but let me remind you that on the BeautyLab, we explore and deal with ALL new stuff, and this green gem is currently one trend that is definitely enticing the industry!

More and more brands offer now moisturizing creams and nourishing oils made from cannabidiol, one of the main active ingredients of the cannabis. These products show significant positive effects on the skin because they rely on the oil extracted on the cannabis sativa (scientific name of hemp). Rich in omega 3 & 6, it improves elasticity, highly hydrates and soothes any type of skin or hair. In addition to its anti-inflammatory, healing and antioxidants, the seeds present also anti-stress benefits.

The Body Shop was one of the 1st brand to use cannabis in its cosmetics formula. For the past 20 years, the British brand is selling a whole line, named Hemp, composed of products made of fair-trade hemp seed oil and whose best-seller is the protective hand lotion launch in 1998. This item that promises a 12h hydration became so iconic that today, one is sold every 9 seconds in the world! Since then, The Body Shop developed a wide range of hemp-based products against skin dryness on every part of the body.

Note that at that time, brands like The Body Shop used the word “hemp” on their packaging, whereas today’s brands don’t hesitate to write “cannabis”, which can be more appealing for curious consumers seeking for new things.

Today, especially with a legal clarification in the French market on the commercial purpose of this molecule, many brands bet on hemp cosmetics. This is the case for Sephora Collection which sells a face mask against imperfection, for Horace – a male cosmetic French brand – and its natural shower gel, and for the American brand Milk Makeup with its cannabis-infused mascara.

Seeing a unique opportunity to grow, some new companies even fully specialized in cannabis cosmetics! The 100% made in France Ho Karan – which means I love you in Breton language – is born with the belief that everything is good in cannabis. The range is quite large (oil, cream, serum, deodorant, soap) and last year the brand even convinced Sephora and Nature & Découvertes to commercialize its products in their stores. A real success story thanks to cannabis!
